Equipment

  • 1 Saucepan medium size
  • 1 Wooden spoon
  • 1 immersion blender optional for smooth texture

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 can 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Add-ins

  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Preparation

  • Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic. Set aside.

Cooking the Sauce

  • In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to puree the sauce to your desired consistency.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. If using, add red pepper flakes, red wine, and Parmesan cheese. Stir well.

Serving and Storage

  • Use the sauce immediately on your favorite pizza or store it for later use.
  • Allow the sauce to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for up to three months.
